I wanted decent quality, not something for a beginner but not something for an expert with tons of cash either because I'm primarily a guitarist who only plays bass when I'm writing/recording for my songs. I'd narrowed it down to a Squier VM PJ after a sales rep turned me on to the solid reputation of Squier for basses, and an Epiphone EB3 or Thunderbird 4. I gave this Jaguar a go at a music shop and was blown away by how immensely it made the previously mentioned models sound utterly limited and boring, especially since it's the cheapest of all. The pickups and eq give me the smooth speaking voice all the way to crisp metallic crunch to a full powerful punch/thump tone for slappin - in a few ways it's actually better SOUNDING than my USA P-bass was (just not as good FEELING). The key is the bass boost: It covers the exact perfect frequencies to give a full, round, warm, BOOM that fills up the room.

Not too puffy, airy, subsonic-y if you will, or too brittle and poppy either. And I got the same astounding results from the in-store bass amps that go for 800 and my 25 watt crate combo at home. The feel is quite good and I have no complaints at all even though it's not on par with a model that costs a grand.

It's still easy and very fun to play. This is THE bass you should get because you won't be able to truly 'step up' from it until you start spending over 600 mark. I replaced the bridge to a Badass II.

I would suggest pricing a bridge replacement into this basses price if you need to gig with it. The saddles sadly slid around and it was hard to allign the strings with the neck. The badass took care of this, and so will any high-quality replacement like the Babazics or Hipshot.

However, you really have to mess with the knobs to get the tone you want. It can be too bright of a tone at times I found and had to use a Jazz bass instead which tells you how bright it can get. This isn't a negative, its just different. On a different recording (drums, bass, vocals only) the Jaguar was great.

With the active pickup on and all the knobs turned up you get such a full sound its like a freaking jaguar is going to jump out of the amp and kill somebody! Pretty cool bass. BTW, I was playing some American standard jazz basses prior to this and the Jaguar is better in terms of playability and the fullness of sound. It plays extremely well, and the sound from the active pickups is nearly on par with my mid 90s Fender standard Jazz bass. I was very surprised at how good it sounds and how well it plays at this price point.

I may have just gotten a bad one, but the bridge on mine was off center by about 3/8 of an inch. Around the upper frets, the G string is out nearly to the edge of the fretboard, and the E string is shifted way too far toward the middle.

It's not unplayable, but it does take some getting used to. Obviously I didn't expect complete perfection in a budget guitar, but that's something that should have been noticed during quality control. Also, the action was so high that the strings around the upper frets were a solid inch off the fretboard. I brought it into a local guitar shop and had it set up properly, and it plays great! The finish is flawless, but there was a big gouge in the pickguard - likely from shipping. For the price, this is definitely a decent guitar. I'd recommend it to someone who is just starting out, or to a veteran player who wants a second guitar.

Bass boost does just that, and noticably so. Fender really outdid themselves by placing a bunch of greatness into this baby. Really just an awesome bass. Smooth finished neck which makes for quick sliding up and down with ease.

Nice weight to it, doesn't feel flemsy in the hand. Doesn't tilt forward while playing standing up. Chrome hardware and Basswood body. The neck is definitely the slim, quick, jazz neck and i love it! The sound and quality is top notch, i was a little hesitant being that it is a squire. But i was not disappointed the slightest. It's very diverse in the styles of music, Going from a very heavy punky to a smooth sound. This is my first PJ bass and I was blown away by how easy it was to transfer to completely different styles of music. Playing very heavy metal music was no problem, and then transferring over to Christian/gospel music was no problem at all. The only problem is, that is slightly heavier than most other bass's.

No wrinkles or blotches. The strings were loose, so i tuned it up and check the intonation at the 12TH fret and it was dead on.

The sustain is incretable all the way down the neck to the last fret not one dead spot or muted note. The neck is thin and fast, narrow at the nut like a jazz bass and not too wide at the body and no string buzz. I have small hands so this is just made for me. The setup was perfect right out of the box. First impression.

I love this bass. I had a fender pj bass once with the same pick up configuration, and a jazz neck, american made. Today they call it a modified p bass, i think. This bass is every bit as good.

I have had a lot of basses in my life. This one is ranked in the top 3. The only con i have is minor. It is an active bass and it did come with a battery, but the battery was dead. A new battery and it was good to go.

I have never owned an active guitar before so i did realize it would play at all without a battery. I'd read the great reviews and the price was phenomenal, so I decided to give it a shot. Straight out of the box the bass was good-playable and pretty.

I made some slight truss rod adjustments and lowered the action according to the specs on the Fender website, but that's easy (hint: buy an inexpensive set of automotive feeler gauges). The finish is good, the neck is straight and fast, the frets seem well-finished, the tuners stay in tune, and the electronics are solid. I did switch out the neck pickup for a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound, but that'd just because I already had it and knew I liked the tone it produced. I never used the bridge pickup in my main p/j bass, but on the Jaguar I find that if I kill the neck pickup, max out the bridge, roll the tone about half way down and use the bass boost at about 25% I get a really good funk tone. This makes the bass *very* versatile. So far I have nothing but great things to say about this bass.

This bass plays almost as well. I spent about 15 minutes setting the neck and bridge and I would definately use this bass for a gig. The P/J pickup combination is great. You can get a variety of tones easily. It took me a minute to figure out the knobs, however.

The thing that most attracted me to this instrument was the availability of the Precision and Jazz tones, since I wasn't sure which one I would ultimately favor. This bass did not disappoint – you'll get lots of flexibility and control over tones (there's a knob control for middle pickup, bridge pickup, master tone, and active bass boost). Using these controls, I've been able to get everything from smooth, mellow jazz vibes to aggresive, overdriven tones out of this bass. If you're a guitar player looking to invest in a good starting bass, or for anyone taking up bass for the first time, look no further – especially because I think guitar players have an expectation of a lot of tonal flexibility from an instrument.

I'll also say this bass plays like an instrument twice that price – at this price, you can't go wrong. You'll be able to experiment with a wide variety of sounds on a single bass without having to – or before making a jump to – the high-end basses.

You may want to have the bass set up professionally as the action in a bit high for my liking, but that goes for any new instrument. The only complaint I have is that the bass arrived with some rattling in the compartment housing for the pots. Bottom line if your even looking at a bass in this price range then i would highly recommend this one. I even tune this guy down to drop c alot and it handles it pretty well with some light top med bottom d'addario strings. Get the heavy gauge though if you drop tune that low for everything though.
