This level of thinking helps develop your reasoning and critical thinking skills, which are wayyyy more important than just having a bunch of facts memorized. Don't get me wrong, you definitely need to memorize a ton of stuff, but if you boil things down to basic principles and mechanisms then it is easier to remember and easier to extrapolate to situations that involve difficult scenarios.

I didn't have a systems-based curriculum so I cant speak to that sorry. Also avoid the ppl who say just 'study for the boards' the whole time, while neglecting class.

All of the top scorers in my class were people that were also at the top of the class. You'd be surprised how many 'low-yield' things that ppl neglect in class actually show up on Step 1 or other exams. Make sure you have fun and have a balanced lifestyle and all that jazz too • • • • •.

Curriculum is not systems based but year 1 = anatomy,physio,histo etc and year 2 = path, micro, pharm. I went into year 2 with a pretty strong bkgd in all year 1 subjects (I tried pretty hard during year 1, so I wasn't playing catch up or anything). For micro: I used the lange medical microbiology textbook. I'd read a section before lecture. Go through the lecture slides.

Then read that section again. Micro was definitely my strength throughout and I think that paid off because NBME loves to test micro on Shelves and Step1. For pharm: I made anki cards out of FA and just slammed it in. Also used pretest which is pretty good.

For path: I used pathoma and Big Robbins. I'd view the pathoma before lecture and then after lecture read the Robbins chapter. This may be more than some suggest but I think it helped me see the entire landscape and get a solid foundation in the core of medicine.

I'd also do a decent amount of lecture based studying because that is what our tests were geared towards and I wanted to honor classes. Qbank: I did usmleRX and Kaplan throughout the year. In my free time, during lecture or whenever, I'd just pound out questions. Just do this mercilessly and eventually you see patterns and you're able to reason through multiple choice q's super easily. I saved uworld for dedicated time, just so I had something to do.
